Laserblast: Shrek III, Masters of Horror

This week’s big fantasy-film home video release is SHREK THE THIRD. The latest installment in the popular franchise arrives in Widescreen DVD, Full Screen DVD, and HD DVD. DVD bonus features include “Donkey Dance,” “Shrek’s Guide to Parenthood,” Lost Scenes, “Big Green Goofs.” DVD-ROOM fetures allow viewers to create their own Shrek mini-movie by mixing scenes from the three features and setting them to music. The HD DVD offers some interactive and web-enabled features: The Animator’s Corner (scene-to-scene storyboard comparisons); a branching option that reveals Lost Scenes; “The World of Shrek” (biographies of the characters and the actors); “Shrek’s Trivia Track;” and “Donkey’s Digital Coloring Book.” Along with the new SHREK comes the inevitable “Shrek Trilogy” set, which repackages the first two films with the new one.
Also available this week is a Blu-ray disc of MASTERS OF HORROR: Season 1, Volume 3. Available as a stand-alone is “Dream Cruise,” which aired as a one-hour episode of the series but has now been expanded to an 85-minute feature. Directed by Noriu Tsurata (RING 0), the film is based on a short story by RING novelist Koji Suzuki, about an ill-fated yacht cruise that leads to a close encounter with the supernatural.
Other DVD releases include a 30th Anniversary edition of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND; a 20th Anniversary edition of THE PRINCESS BRIDE; WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, from the Weinstein Company’s new “extreme horror” home video label; DRIFTWOOD, sort of an Americanized version of THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE; and cult director Jean Rollin’s THE NUDE VAMPIRE. Find these and more below the fold.
