FOX orders 'Punisher' Pilot

Punisher_Spider-ManDeadline reports that the Fox Network has made a “put pilot commitment” to ABC Studios and Ed Bernero (CRIMINAL MINDS) for a TV adaptation of Marvel Comic’s The Punisher.
A put pilot commitment generally means that a network agrees to make and broadcast a pilot episode of  a series (subject to penalities if they fail to do so). Many pilots never make it to the air, “put pilot” projects often do.
THE PUNISHER is being “described as an hour-long procedural…   and a new take” on the comic book character, originally created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita, Sr. & Ross Andru.
Initially an antagonist for Spider-Man (The Amazing Spider-Man #129 , February 1974), the conflicted, lethal vigilante later bcame seen more as a force for justice.
In the series, Frank Castle will apparently be a “rising star  detective with the New York Police Department,  who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher, seeking justice for those the system has failed.”
The comic book Frank Castle is a justice-obsessed Army veteran with no secret identiy, per se. He generally kills his criminal targets, usually organized crime figures. However, more colorful “super-villain” adversaries can become his focus at times.
Ed Bernero will executive produce the pilot for ABC Studios, with  Marvel Entertainment. He also has a paranormal western, THE EYE in development at ABC.
FOX has also ordered a pilot of DC Comics’ supernatural avenger, THE SPECTRE.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE
PUNISHER: WAR ZONE

The Punisher has previously appeared in the live action films THE PUNISHER  (1989), starring Dolph Lundgren, THE PUNISHER  (2004) , played by Thomas Jane, and  PUNISHER: WAR ZONE  (2008) with Ray Stevenson in the role.
The character has also been used on various animated Marvel shows, and featured in video games.

'Dr. Strange' Movie "Sooner"?

STRANGE TALES_110In a brief video interview at NY Comic Con this weekend, Marvel’s Kevin Feige said we may see a DOCTOR STRANGE movie “sooner rather than later”.
Not committing to any time frame, he said he would “love to see” a ‘Doc Strange’ movie “be part of phase two”—presumably meaning the films planned for post-AVENGERS filming ,such as IRON MAN 3, and other Disney-produced and distributed fims.
At the present, Paramount Pictures reamains  involved in the Marvel Studios’ productions, if only on the back end.
A script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer has been completed (based on the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko), though it’s unknown if this version is going foward.
No director or lead actor are attached as yet, although Patrick Dempsey (GREY’S ANATOMY) has expressed interest in playing the role.

In Vancover, subbing for a fishing town in Alaska, Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent seems to be going for a bearded, manly vibe.  Off “finding himself”, perhaps?

And it seems Amy Adams hasn’t dyed her red tresses to fit into the more tradional veiw of Lois Lane.
Of course, Noel Neil had auburn curls in THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, and the character has sometimes been depicted as a redhead in the comics.

'Beware the Batman' & DC Nation

Sam Register, executive vice president for creative affairs at Warner Brothers Animation, revealed at MIP Junior (Kids Entertainemt Conference) that the next Batman animated series will be titled BEWARE THE BATMAN.
According World’s Finest,  the CGI animated series, set for 2013 will feature:

“… A classic-looking Batman teaming up with a gun-toting Alfred Pennyworth and a female ninja sidekick.
BEWARE THE BATMAN is executive-produced by Glen Murakami, and will explore the mythology’s more obscure villains, such as Professor Pyg, but also won’t shy away from featuring some of the more well-known Batman foes.
In the series, Batman will team up with a younger female sidekick named Katana. During the keynote, Register added that Katana will fill the sidekick role, but won’t be a replacement for Robin.”

Register also provided  more  details about the Cartoon Network DC NATION programming.

Wonder Girl, Batgirl, and Supergirl will team up in the girl appeal SUPER BEST FRIENDS FOREVER.
THE DOOM PATROL will apear in  animated shorts.
Previously announced for 2012:
Another season of YOUNG JUSTICE and…  GREEN_LANTERN_ANIM

GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES
Based upon the DC Comics super hero, the series is an all-new CG animated action series from Warner Bros.
As Earth’s Green Lantern, Hal Jordan is used to being in dangerous situations—but he’s never faced anything like this! Set at the farthest reaches of deep space, Hal must face down an invasion from the Red Lantern Corps. Hal is soon joined by an all-new group of heroes on a mission to protect Guardian Space —and the Green Lantern Corps itself!

I had never heard of “Professor Pyg” before — turns out he’s more an adversary of the recent  Dick Grayson/Batman Damien Wayne/Robin, rather than being one of the classic set of villains.

'The Avengers' Assemble for EW

Entertainment Weekly’s latest covery story is Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS .AVENGERS_EW Cover
The article mentions that although the cast got along famously, the assembled Avengers do NOT hit it off well at all. Well, no surprise there, if you’ve read the comics…
Director Joss Whedon notes that much of the dialog is being rewritten as they go, somestimes on-set. Iron Man Robert Downey Jr has been urging Whedon to push the boundries, it seems. Hopefully, it will give the film extra drama and humor, which has worked well in the past with the Marvel characters.
THE AVENGERS is due in theaters May 4th, 2012.

Justice League: Doom

Justice-League-Doom_LWarner Home Video Press Release:

Primetime television stars Nathan Fillion and Tim Daly, the reigning voices of Green Lantern and Superman, respectively, join an exciting group of actors reprising their famed cartoon roles in JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM, an all-new entry in the popular series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies due in early 2012 from Warner Home Video.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM finds Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Batman on their heels when a team of super villains discover and implement the Dark Knight’s “contingency plans” for stopping any rogue Justice League member. The story is inspired by Mark Waid’s much-heralded JLA: Tower of Babel.
Fillion, the star of ABC’s hit TV drama CASTLE, made his debut as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in the recent Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Fillion made his initial DCU bow as the voice of Steve Trevor in the 2008 hit Wonder Woman.
Currently headlining the cast of ABC’s popular Private Practice, Daly originated the title character’s voice in the landmark cartoon, Superman: The Animated Series. He has reprised the role in two DCU films: the 2009 extravaganza Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and the 2010 thriller Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.
In addition to current primetime stars Fillion and Daly, the cast is a grand reunion of the original group of actors who provided the voices of the Justice League for the cartoon of the same name and its follow-up, Justice League Unlimited.
Reprising their roles are Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Breaking In) as Flash, Susan Eisenberg (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) as Wonder Woman and Carl Lumbly (Alias) as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. Bumper Robinson (A Different World, Transformers: Animated) joins the cast as Cyborg.
The Justice League faces two sets of villainous teams in the film – The Royal Flush Gang and a sextet of notable evildoers. The latter group includes three voice acting alumni of the Justice League animated series: Phil Morris (Smallville, Seinfeld) as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo (The Wonder Years) as Star Sapphire, and Alexis Denisof (Angel) as Mirror Master. Also opposing our heroes are Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) as Bane, Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files) as Metallo, and Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) as Cheetah.
David Kaufman (Danny Phantom) also reprises his Justice League role of Jimmy Olsen.
The film is executive produced by Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One), and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One), who is also credited as producer alongside Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series). Justice League: Doom is the final script from the late Dwayne McDuffie (All-Star Superman, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths). Casting and dialogue direction is once again in the capable hands of Andrea Romano (Batman: Year One, SpongeBob SquarePants).
Warner Home Video will premiere the Justice League: Doom trailer during its presentation at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater.
Also premiering during that session will be the Catwoman animated short that is attached to BATMAN: YEAR ONE, the next DC Universe Animated Movie (streeting October 18).
A co-production of Warner Premiere, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the direct-to-video Justice League: Doom animated feature debuts Early 2012 on Blu-ray, DVD, OnDemand and for Download from Warner Home Video.

The addition of the Hal Jordan Green Lantern and the character of Cyborg to the team seems to indicate an effort to bring the cartoon universe more in line with the New 52 shake-up in the current comic books.
And reportedly, the plot description more or less mirrors the intended storyline of the live-action JUSTICE LEAGUE movie that went as far as casting the actors and costuming them before the plug got pulled over script and production tax breaks concerns.

Fox to Bring 'The Spectre' to TV?

Spectre! _ WrathDeadline reported that the FOX Network has optioned the DC Comics supernatural hero The Spectre as a potential TV series.
Brandon Camp (JOHN DOE) has been commissioned to write the script and if greenlighted, executive produce  along with Bill Gerber (QUEEN OF THE DAMNED).
The Spectre was created by artist Benard Bailey and writer Jerry Siegel (co-creator of Superman). Debuting in More Fun Comics #52 in 1940.
The Spectre was originally the ghost of murdered police detective Jim Corrigan, permitted to return to a kind of life and required to function as a supernatural crime-fighter.
Spectre_MF52In more recent years, DC has presented The Spectre as a kind of Avenging Angel or non-corporeal spirit, the very personification of  Vengeance. He’s now considered  an immortal  being who only possessed the resurrected body of Corrigan, and later inhabited the bodies of former Green Lantern Hal Jordan (ridding him of his possession by Parallax) and Crispus Allen, a Gotham City policeman( killed by a police technician coincidently named Jim Corrigan —though not intended to be the Golden/Silver Age character).

He’s been a part of The Justice Society, and sometimes comes to the aid of other superheroes when they are faced with occult forces.  Without regularly uniting with a human host, The Spectre can lose all sense of perspective and become increasingly harsh, erratic,  cruel and violent.
Thus far. The  Spectre has only appeared in animated form, such as in BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, voiced by Mark Hamill, and the  DC SHOWCASE: THE SPECTRE solo short, voiced by Gary Cole. (Included on the JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS DVD.)
Warner Brothers Television and Gerber Productions will produce, should Fox commission a pilot or series.
