Russell Crowe sports a wizardly look as Jor-El, father of Kal-El of Krypton.
In Vancover, subbing for a fishing town in Alaska, Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent seems to be going for a bearded, manly vibe.  Off “finding himself”, perhaps?

And it seems Amy Adams hasn’t dyed her red tresses to fit into the more tradional veiw of Lois Lane.
Of course, Noel Neil had auburn curls in THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, and the character has sometimes been depicted as a redhead in the comics.

'Man of Steel' Story Description

Warner Brothers Pitures’ capsule description of the in-production MAN OF STEEL comes via the Superman Homepage:
MAN of Steel_CAVILL_large“The Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Entertainment, and Legendary Pictures feature film “Man of Steel” will be holding open casting calls in Nanaimo and Ucluelet on Vancouver Island. The film is seeking local people to work as background artists in scenes to be filmed in early October. This is fully paid work. There will be some casting for speaking roles in Vancouver, however this open casting call is for extras only.
“Man of Steel” is currently filming in the Chicago, Illinois area and shooting will move to British Columbia on September 21, 2011. Filming will continue in Vancouver and surrounding areas through January 20, 2012.”

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time.
Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here?
Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions.

But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer?
Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Michael Shannon On Zod Casting

Michael Shannon (BOARDWALK EMPIRE) was interviewed at the 2011 RiverRun International Film Festiva, where he was honored as an “Emerging Master”.
In this clip, he discusses the strange (to him) process of meeting with Zack Snyder and the improvised screen test that lead to him being cast as Zod for Warner Brothers Pictures MAN OF STEEL.

Michael Shannon Cast as Zod

Press Release:

“Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Superman film, titled MAN OF STEEL.
Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”
As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.
Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire,” from executive producer Martin Scorsese.
He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’ Take Shelter from director/writer Jeff Nichols. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film.
The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. MAN OF STEEL will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

So it’s Zod, after all.
Could be worse. Could be another real-estate mad, campy Luthor.

Zack Snyder on 'Man of Steel'

Henry Cavill, Entertainment Weekly

Interviewed by the L.A. Times, director Zack Synder confirmed that the new Superman movie —likely to be called THE MAN OF STEEL— will be a true reboot, ignoring SUPERMAN RETURNS and the Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve films.

“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies.
If you look at BATMAN BEGINS there’s that structure: there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of ‘Respect the canon, but don’t be a slave to the movies.’
“Superman is the one constant in the universe. You know that if you do Superman right — or at least if you do him with respect — you know you end up with something great. … in some ways that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet, but also the most unknown. Just what he can be? People have preconceived ideas about him, but probably all of them are wrong.”

In addition to Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, the cast thus far includes Diane Lane as Martha Kient, and the now confirmed Kevin Costner
as Jonathan Kent.

Synder declined to comment on the design for the Man of Steel’s costume, but implied the public will see it relatively soon.
“We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that,  because someone will be on the set and get a picture of it.”

I asked if Snyder had anything he could share about the costume that Cavill will wear. ”I can’t say — although I appreciate the question. I’d love to talk about it. We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that because [otherwise] someone will be on the set and get a picture of it.”

Snyder & Cavill on Superman Role

CAvill_SuperM_EWEntertainment Weekly is featuring the first pic of Henry Cavill for the new Superman film.
He’s not in actual costume, but very much in character, with a S-Sheild t-shirt beneath a black leather jacket.
The latest issue will feature inteview with the British actor and director Zack Snyder (WATCHMEN).
Disscusing Henry  Cavill’s audition and screen test wearing a costume based on Christopher Reeve’s movie uniform,  Cavill claims he was neverous about the test, as it came during the period he had to  loose the musclar build he developed for THE IMMORTALS,  and slim down for THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY.

“All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance.’
The actor inside me was going: You’re not ready! You’re not ready!”

Fortunately, Zack Snyder Synder didn’t share his qualms.
“If you can put on that suit and pull it off, that’s an awesome achievement. He walked out, and no one laughed. Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors.
Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go ‘Wow.’ Okay: This was Superman.’ ”
