Nic Cage’s latest, SEASON OF THE WITCH — about two knights who seek to redeem themselves for their participation in the Crusades by transporting an accused witch to a monastery for trial — has been roundly burned at the stake by most critics. But is this film truly deserving of such condemnation? Heedless of the warnings, CFQ’s Steve Biodrowski, Lawrence French, and Dan Persons have braved exposure to the first genre film of 2011 and emerged, if not enriched, then at least more entertained than any of them expected. In this episode they discuss what works, what doesn’t, and whether it’s time to end the pile-on on Mr. Cage’s career.

  1. Nicholas Cage has been talking about his love of Horror movies and actors Christopher Lee and Vincent Price while promoting SEASON OF THE WITCH, with two his favorites (and mine) being MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH and THE DEVIL RIDES OUT. Excerpts from some of his comments:
NICHOLAS CAGE: I wanted to try to find new looks and new styles of movies to work in, because it has been thirty years (since I began acting). I… like to go into different careers. So I’m celebrating the careers of Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, who I was fortunate to work with in SEASON OF THE WITCH. I like those movies. It is sincere for me. Those are the movies I watch, so I thought I should do that.
Working with Christopher was hilarious. One of the best stories he shared with me was how when he was living in Hollywood back in the ’70’s, he was at the Playboy Mansion and they were watching one of Mohammad Ali’s fights. After it was over, Ali said on TV, “I won this fight for all my friends and Christopher Lee!” Christopher told me that everyone at the party said, “How did you get Mohammad Ali to say that?” Chris looked at them and said, “Magic… Black magic.”
