Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster – Theatrical Trailer
As part of our weekend tribute to the late special effects director Sadamasa Arikawa, here is the Japanese trailer for GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER (1966). This is a film that had some of the shabbiest effects of any monster movie (the badly beaten Godzilla suit is much in need of repair) and yet it somehow remains a good crowd pleasing effort as long as you go in knowing not to take it seriously (“Oh no, get out – it’s a nuclear reactor!” shouts one of our heroes as they poke their nose into a room inside a secret base run by some nefarious types out to take over the world). The Japanese trailer is distinguished by the use on the soundtrack of several classical music excerpts (including Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” previously heard in Disney’s FANT-ASIA) – which sound nothing like Masuro Sato’s original score for the film. The trailer also gives an exaggerated idea of Mothra’s role – little more than a cameo in the actual film.
