LADY LIBERTY, RIP: Gerry Canavan presents a gallery of images from science-fiction films and fiction, featuring the Statue of Liberty in ruins – a continually recurring visual motif, most recently seen in CLOVERFIELD. PLANET OF THE APES, A.I., ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, and THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW (pictured at right) used the image in their advertising, either in the film itself or in the advertising art.
GODZILLA VS. CLOVERFIELD: E-Online interviews Steve Ryfle on the subject of the recent Godzilla box DVD set.
HOTTEST SEX ROBOTS OF SCIENCE FICTION: iop.com gives us their top ten, including Pris from BLADE RUNNER and Gigolo Joe from A.I.
PETER DINKLAGE IS BIG ON DWARF ROLE IN “CASPIAN”: Despite the title, this U.S.A Today article spends only a few paragraphs with actor Dinklage discussing his character, a warrior gnome named Trumpkin, in THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN. Most of it the article is an interview with director Andrew Adamson discussing how this film will be different from THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE (“more of a boy’s movie…a harsher world…villains are human and that lends a more realistic attitude”).
BEST OF BLADE RUNNER ON THE INTERNET: In honor of the recent “final” cut of BLADE RUNNER, the Film Babble Blog offers a list of links to some of the most in-depth and interesting material written about the film.
THE WASTELAND: POST-LORD OF THE RINGS FANTASY LANDSCAPE LOOKS BLEAK: The Silver Key Blogspot laments that, although the success of LORD OF THE RINGS ushered in a new era of big-budget fantasy epics, most of the results have been unimpressive.
TEN BEST GAY AND BISEXUAL SCIENCE-FICTION CHARACTERS: AfterElton.Com offers up their list, including Andrew Wells from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and Dr. Frank-N-Furter from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Somewhat incongruously, ZORRO, THE GAY GLADE (1981) shows up, even though the film is not science-fiction. Their number one pick goes to Captain Jack Harkness in BBC America’s TORCHWOOD.
