"Tropic" thunders over Babylon

The big sci-fi action debut of the weekend, BABYLON A.D. saw lots of rain falling on its box office parade, as it was bested by last week’s winner TROPIC THUNDER, which remained #1 for the second week in a row. BABYLON A.D. opened in 3,390 theatres wtih $11.5-million, barely edging out THE DARK KNIGHT for second place.
Meanwhile, the Batman sequel was actually up one notch – at #3 – from its fourth place finish in the previous frame. DARK NIGHT added $11.1-million to its seven-week total of $504.8-million.
DEATH RACE crashed and burned, piling up at #6 – down three slots from its debut in third place. The sci-fi remake earned $7.9-million for a two-week total of $24.7-million.
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS orbited into tenth place, down from #5. Earning $3.8-million in its third week of release, the film has a total of $30.7-million.
Both THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR and MIRRORS dropped out of the Top Ten. MUMMY unwrapped in 12th place (down from ninth) with $3.4-million for a total of $98.7-million. MIRRORS broke into 13th place (down from #7), where it earned $3.3-million for a three-week total of $25.4-million.
