Action-adventure and cartoon comedy ruled the day as the win, place, and show positions at the box office were taken by RUSH HOUR 3, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, and THE SIMPSONS MOVIE. That left the new fantasy film STARDUST in fourth place, while the weekend’s other genre debut, SKINWALKERS, failed to find a place in the Top Ten.
STARDUST earned an estimated $9.01-million in 2,540 theatres. Unless word of mouth rescues the pic, expect a fast fade from movie screens and a resurrection on home video.
As for returning fantasy, horror, and sci-fi films, only a few showed any legs.
UNDERDOG dropped from third place to fifth in its second weekend. The film earned $6.46-million in its sophomore session, raising its two-week total to $24.75-million.
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX cast a spell over $5.39-million. That was good enough for an eighth place finish, down three slots from the previous weekend. After five weeks in release, the film has totaled $272.01-million in North America.
TRANSFORMERS mutated out of the Top Ten, dropping from #8 to #11, where it sold $3.29-million worth of tickets. That yielded a six-week total of $302.92-million.
