SYFY PREMIERES BEAST LEGENDS
NEW SERIES INVESTIGATES LEGENDARY CREATURES FROM KRAKENS TO FIRE DRAGONS
DEBUTS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, AT 10PM
New York, New York – August 17, 2010 – Syfy will premiere Beast Legends, a new six-part series which journeys around the world using scientific data to reconstruct what mythological monsters, from Krakens and Griffins to Fire Dragons, would have looked like.
The debut of Beast Legends on Thursday, September 9, at 10PM (ET/PT) follows the fourth season return of Destination Truth at 9PM (ET/PT).
In each of the hour-long episodes, Beast Legends uncovers historical and eyewitness accounts by zeroing in on archaeological and other physical evidence to assemble the most accurate picture possible of these monsters, from where they might have lived to how they would have behaved.
Beast Legends then moves to the ‘Beast Lab’ to build the creature, first as initial sculpts and wire-frame forms, before finally bringing it to life in stunning 3D CGI.
The investigations are conducted by the “Beast Seekers,” an expert team of specialists:
Stephen Leonard: Adventurer and Veterinary Surgeon based in Bristol, England
Kathryn Denning: Myth expert, anthropologist, archaeologist and professor at Toronto’s York University.
Scott Edwards: Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Ornithology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University.
Francis Manapul: Philippine-born, now Toronto-based, renowned comic book artist.
This season, Beast Legends will explore:
The Kraken – Thursday, September 9, at 10PM (ET/PT)
The Beast Seekers investigate the sailor’s legend of the Kraken, a terrifying multi-tentacled sea monster that snatches men from ships’ decks and crushes entire vessels, sending them to the ocean bottom.
Fire Dragon – Thursday, September 16, at 10PM (ET/PT)
The Beast Seekers venture deep into the primeval forests of Poland in search of the truth behind ancient legends of a terrifying, fire-breathing dragon called Smok.
Megajaws – Thursday, September 23, at 10PM (ET/PT)
The Beast Seekers travel to Fiji to learn about Dakuwaqa, an all-seeing, all-knowing Shark God – a huge beast that can change shape at will.
Winged Lion – Thursday, September 30, at 10PM (ET/PT)
The Beast Seekers explore Mongolia’s Altai (Golden) Mountains in search of a massive, legendary creature with the head of an eagle, razor-sharp talons and the body of a gigantic lion – the vicious beast known as the Griffin.
Wildman of Vietnam – Thursday, October 7, at 10PM (ET/PT)
The Beast Seekers explore the remote, unexplored jungles of Vietnam in search of the Wildman, a giant, hairy, bloodthirsty beast similar to North America’s Bigfoot or Sasquatch.
Bird Monster – Thursday, October 14, at 10PM (ET/PT)
In the ancestral Navajo lands of New Mexico, the Beast Seekers investigate the legend of a giant bird predator the size of a small airplane.

Jason Flemyng To Take On Azazel In X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

1zgz61iAccording to Comingsoon.net, character actor Jason Flemyng – known for his many character parts in LAYER CAKE, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, and most recently a bit part in KICK-ASS – has announced that he will be playing the character of Azazel, father of Nightcrawler, in the upcoming X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. For those unfamiliar with the character:

The character first appeared in “Uncanny X-Men” #428 in a storyline called “The Draco” where we finally learned that Kurt Wagner a.k.a Nightcrawler was the son of the lead of an ancient race of mutants, from biblical times no less, who looked like demons and who could teleport by opening portals into other dimensions. In the comics, Azazel had been banished to the “Brimstone dimension” by angels, but left that dimension to father children, one of them being Nightcrawler.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is set to be released June 3rd, 2011

Mark Millar Talks KICK-ASS 2

shut_up_kick-ass_posterIn an interview with movieweb.com, Comic book writer Mark Millar (KICK-ASS, WANTED, ULTIMATE AVENGERS) sat down to discuss the upcoming KICK ASS 2: BALLS TO THE WALL comic and film, sequel to this past April’s surprise hit. During the interview he reveals possible plot points, including parallels to Western films & new evil wrought by Red Mist:

“The film and the comic book are very closely tied together. There are only a few minor changes towards the end. It does led directly into a sequel, and I am writing the sequel as I always planned it to be. The actors may be a little bit older, or bigger. They can address that in the movie. But I am not changing anything for the comic book. We left things off with her being adopted by this extremely nice man. He is a cop. And she has to stop killing people, you know? That seems like an interesting starting point in the next one in regards to her character. She is going to be like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, where she hasn’t picked up a gun in years. It’s that type of thing. I like the idea of doing that with an eleven year old girl. She was part of this massive cacophony of violence. But she’s not allowed to kill people anymore. She is consumed with anger, and forced to watch TV shows instead. Halfway through the movie, or the comic, we will follow her as she picks up a gun again. It is going to be awesome.”

Red Mist becomes like Charles Manson. He goes on-line and influences a bunch of young villains to go against Kick-Ass and Hit Girl. The whole thing ends up as a big gang fight like you’d see in The Warriors. There is going to be a big gang fight in the middle of Times Square between all of these costumed heroes. And at the head will be the Red Mist and Hit Girl.

Millar also suggests a re-teaming with KICK-ASS and X-Men: FIRST CLASS director Matthew Vaughn, which brings hope of more of the gleeful carnage seen in the first one. The KICK-ASS 2 comic is currently in production, with the script and movie soon to follow.

Damon Lindelof To Rewrite ALIEN Prequel

Damon-LindelofAccording to Deadline, a late night deal has been reached for LOST writer Damon Lindelof to re-write Ridley Scott’s upcoming prequel to the sci-fi classic ALIEN. According to Deadline:

In a development as vexing as a Lost plotline, studio insiders said that while Lindelof indeed met with Scott and the studio for that rewrite job, the exchange of ideas between them sparked a take that could well turn out to be a free-standing science fiction film. The studio will decide when Lindelof turns it in. Scott Free is producing and Lindelof’s CAA reps closed his deal last night.

For fans of the series, the choice can be seen as a good one considering the mass appeal of LOST as well as the fact that Mr. Lindelof is also writing & producing the STAR TREK sequel. He is definitely a man who knows his sci-fi. It seems as if the beloved ALIEN is indeed in good hands.

First Pic Of Penelope Cruz in Pirates 4

Cruz is just one more addition to a cast already chock full of amazing actors including Geoffrey Rush reprising his role as Barbossa, and Ian McShane making his debut as the infamous Blackbeard.

Nick Cave To Help Pen THE CROW Remake

Nick CaveThere are few things that get a fan boy’s ire up like the word “remake” (see all YouTube comments on the upcoming film LET ME IN). But for fans of THE CROW, the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee in his last role, there finally comes some good news in regards to its upcoming revamp. According to TheWrap.com, Musician/Writer Nick Cave has been officially signed on to help rewrite the script originally written by the film’s director Stephen Norrington (BLADE, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN). From TheWrap.com:

The last we heard about Relativity Media’s remake of “The Crow,” producer Ed Pressman told MTV that an offer was out to a “major actor” and director Stephen Norrington (“Blade”) had finished a “terrific” screenplay that would be set in two locations: “the southwest — the Mexico/Arizona area — and an urban [setting] — Detroit or Pittsburgh or something like that.”
Well apparently Norrington’s take wasn’t quite “terrific” enough, as Pressman recently told TheWrap that none other than iconic musician and acclaimed screenwriter Nick Cave has come on to rewrite the script.
Hiring Cave to rewrite Norrington’s script is a bold move, but it may prove to be worth it in the long run, as Cave may be the perfect choice to help resurrect the fading franchise.

For those unfamiliar with Nick Cave’s writing work, it is best on display in the 2005 Aussie-Western THE PROPOSITION, starring Ray Winstone & Guy Pierce – a definite must-see! This may be enough to put some minds at ease, though for the rest only time will tell. For those in the latter category, put Cave’s RED RIGHT HAND on your iPod…if the movie is half as cool as that song, then we’re all in for a treat!
