A Luthor back on 'Smallville'
Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello claims there will be a Luthor back on the CW’s SMALLVILLE this year.
No, it’s not the maybe not dead Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), but instead the very much dead Lionel Luthor who will return.
John Glover has agreed to play the role of Lex Luthor’s late father — late because Lex pushed him out a window back in the seventh season — in this, the tenth and final season. Glover’s said to have signed for multiple episodes. He’s not the only deceased father figure to return, Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) will also be back for 2 to 3 episodes.
Just what form these appearances will take is uncertain, though the brief clip shown in the Season 10 teaser would make one think that Pa Kent returns (at least initially) in a sort of near-death experience Clark Kent (Tom Welling) goes through. This kind of thing has happened before to the death’s doorway-prone pre-Superman Clark on the CW show.
The late Kent Sr. has also been impersonated by Brainiac (James Marsters), who is also making a return appearance in the episode “Supergirl”, which will spotlight the return of Clark’s Kryptonian cousin Kara (V’s Laura Vandervoort). This time around, Marsters will actually be Brainiac 5 (who’s sweet on Kara in the Legion of Superheroes comics).
Michael Shanks (STARGATE SG-1) will also return as Carter Hall/Hawkman —who, by the way, is himself reincarnated in current comics continuity.
Speaking of returning from the dead, Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freeman) signed again as a regular, was apparently resurrected from clinical death in season nine’s finale by a figure that’s said to be Darkseid’s Granny Goodness.
Death is only an inconvenience in the comics, why should TV be any different? Glad to see them all back. Now, they really need to get on the phone and make a deal with Michael Rosenbaum before the show concludes…
